7. Drive
Drive is another action move from the stables of Karan Johar’s production house. It is directed by Tarun Mansukhani of the Dostana fame. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput as the lead while Jacqueline Fernandez stars opposite him. Vikramjit Virk and Sapna Pabbi have major roles in the movie too. The movie is based on the Hollywood flick of the same name which starred Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. That movie is itself based on a novel. It is about an unnamed stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. He quickly grows fond of his neighbour and her young son. Their budding relationship is interrupted when Irene’s husband is released from prison. The husband owes protection money from his time in prison and is beaten up by a gangster, who demands that the husband rob a pawnshop to pay off the debt. The gangster gives the neighbour’s son a bullet as a symbol that he and his mother are in danger. The Driver, concerned for the safety of the neighbour and her son, offers to act as the getaway driver for the pawnshop robbery.
Sushant Singh Rajput had a quieter 2017 after the success of MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Detective Byomkesh Bakshi in 2016 and 2015 respectively. His only movie in 2017, Raabta could not do wonders at the box office and was adjudged to be a flop. Jacqueline Fernandez had 2 releases in 2017. Though her first release, A Gentleman opposite Siddharth Malhotra bombed at the box office, her second release Judwaa 2 was a runaway commercial success. She has an interesting movie coming up in 2018 which has been named ‘According to Mathew’. It would be her debut for the Sri Lankan Film industry and would also be her first English language movie.
It is a romance, crime and thriller film based on the crimes of Father Mathew Pieris, Anglican priest of the Church of St Paul the Apostle, Kynsey Road, Colombo, who was convicted of the double murders of his wife ( Eunice Pieris) and Russel Ingram, the husband of his lover in 1979.
