‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ is unquestionably a permanent fixture on every list you prepare about Indian cinema. Boasting of the finest on-screen chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the film had an entire generation swooning.
DDLJ marked the directorial debut of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra’s eldest son, Aditya Chopra in 1995. With his fresh and engaging script, he breathed a new life in the crumbling romance genre in Hindi films. The story of two young non-resident Indians falling in love on a trip to Europe and then going all out to ensure their love culminates into marriage, touched millions of hearts and the film attained an iconic status in no time. Burning its way into the generations of hearts, DDLJ is finding more admires with each passing day.
The film, which has a National Award and 10 Filmfare Awards to its credit, was ranked among The Times of India list of the “10 Bollywood movies you must see before you die”. In 2001, it added another feather to its cap when it overtook the Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan starrer, ‘Sholay’, which had run for over five years at the Minerva theatre, as the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema. The movie has been running at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai for over 21 long years. Made on a budget of approximately Rs. 4 crore, DDLJ minted Rs. 120 crores in its lifetime run.
